Spotlight: Maura Hernandez & The Other Side of The Tortilla

Latina Bloggers Connect SpotlightBienvenidos to the first installment of the Latina Bloggers Connect Spotlight video interview series.

Every week we’ll post an interview with one of the voices that make our corner of the blogosphere so special.

Not only will you see and hear–and possibly discover–many Latina bloggers, you’ll also get social media tips and online marketing and branding advice from the experts.

Our first interview is with Maura Hernandez from The Other Side of The Tortilla, a blog about traditional Mexican cooking.

I first “met” Maura on Twitter and instantly became obsessed with her tweets about Mexican food which always make me nostalgic for my years living in México. After I took one glimpse at her blog, I knew she was onto something big with her well-crafted stories, detailed recipes and gorgeous pictures.

During our Skype video interview, Maura and I chat about:

  • Why Maura created The Other Side of the Tortilla.
  • How her husband’s Mexican family has influenced her content.
  • The social media tools she uses to promote her blog.
  • How Maura uses her blog as a platform towards her goals.
  • Which brands Maura has worked with and how.
  • How to choose a brand that’s a good fit for you and your readers.
  • Maura’s advice to new and prospective bloggers.

  5. Muy bien hecho, Ana Lilian y Maura! Me encantó ver este video. Muy buena entrevista. Maura, you’re right, without a niche you’re super passionate about, you really shouldn’t be blogging y menos por dinero. I just don’t think it would work.

Thanks for your insights! I’m taking away lots of food for thought from this one.

Ana, thank you so much for the opportunity to be featured on the Latina Bloggers Connect Spotlight video series! I really enjoyed making this video with you. Working with you through LBC has given me the gentle push I needed to realize some very important goals for my blog, and for that, I’m very grateful. Since this video was posted a few days ago, I’ve already been contacted by a few brands interested in working with me. I am already working on some new plans to improve my blog with even more diverse content in a way that I can work with brands I know my readers will love. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your guidance, friendship and the platform to promote my work! I definitely hope to be able to contribute to the community you’re building here with my own tips and tricks in the future.

This is exactly what LBC is about..exactly!! Thank you so much for believing in what I´m trying to create and for pushing me forward.
Excited to hear about the new plans for your blog. You have so much to offer that it´s only a matter of putting it out there.
We´ll have to do a follow up video!!

Great video interview. You are both great on camera.
I agree with you both so much about the importance of loving what you write about and being careful as to what brands you connect with. I am super picky and only choose to do reviews (or write about) those things I really like.

    • Ana Lilian says:

      Thanks, Lisa Renata.
It all starts with knowing what your voice is and owning it. If you´re clear with that, you will not have problems choosing who to work with on what.
Your readers will respect that, as well.
That said, there´s always ways to be creative when it comes to working with brands you support.
