Dear PlayBook: What Would I Have Done Without You?
I had already heard the news about you and gasped when I found out the many wonders you came with. Oh, the joy.
Shortly after, I got an invitation to meet you; I jumped on it. My first impression was of how daintily you were pulled out of a normal-sized handbag where you fit perfectly. A handbag, just like that.
I grabbed you and felt instantly connected by how beautifully light and at ease you felt in my hand. My index finger was thrilled that, thanks to you and your ideal size, his constant one-finger texting could be relegated to my two thumbs which can now effortlessly type on your keyboard.
After that first encounter, I was promised you would soon arrive to my home and be added to my list of necessary and adored gadgets to keep my blogger life sane and constantly connected. Impatiently, I waited.
Right before a week-long family trip to Orlando, you came. Timing was perfect. I took you out of the box and marveled at how easy it was to set you up and make you all mine. My husband kept wanting to grab you, but I wasn´t ready. I had the selfish need to discover all your apps and personalize all your settings myself.
It didn´t take me long to figure out my favorite things about you are your high definition screen, your size and weight that are not only perfect for carrying you around, but also to entertain my preschooler; your video and photo camera and the option to reverse the cameras (love, love that!); and the fact that you can handle my multitasking obsession by keeping all the apps I need open. But, what really made me say: “oh, such a little detail, but so, so needed,” is your ability to open and play Flash sites.
With that little detail you helped me avoid what could have been a potentially huge sour moment with my husband. The story is that when we went on our family trip to Orlando and brought you along for the first time, you did more than keep our girl entertained and document our trip in HD. See, my husband is an obsessed soccer fanatic. He’s been a die-hard Pumas (Mexican league) fan practically since he could kick a ball. During our vacation, the Pumas were playing the national championship game. They hadn’t won in years, so this was a HUGE deal. But, we had a major problem–the hotel we were staying in didn’t have any of the Spanish-language stations (ridiculous, I know!), nor any of the sports cable channels showing the game.
His first instinct was to grab his iPad and desperately look for the game online. What happened? All the sites streaming the game live used Flash! Nope, your friend the iPad still doesn’t play Flash sites. In that moment I saw him turn towards you with lust in his eyes and a last-hope prayer on his lips. He grabbed you, quickly searched for the game and in no time at all was streaming the match live with perfect sound and a superb image quality.
Best part of all, the Pumas won the championship!!
Thank you, PlayBook for helping what could have been a very sad situation turn into a glorious moment for all.
Don’t worry, you are still mine. He can only have you when he really needs you.
Meanwhile, you and I can continue multitasking, documenting and sharing our world together.
Love,
Ana
