Food blogging is delicious!! Sharing your favorite recipes is a outlet of your creativity and your love for food. Shouldn’t your pictures deserve the same attention? Capture your readers with sensational pictures, invite them to your table and keep them coming back for more with these simple tips for food styling.
Simple Food Styling Tips
Natural Light – Natural light hands down is the best option for quality pictures. Natural light keeps your plate looking fresh and gives the reader a at the table feel. Find a spot in your home where natural light streams freely, next to a large window or door. Snap a few pictures in different locations to find what works best for you. If natural light is not available, research lighting options and find an alternative that fits your budget.
Color – Play with matching and contrasting colors with your pictures. Add color with plates, cutlery or colorful garnish. A swirl of cream in a bowl of soup or a drizzle of chocolate sauce over your featured ice cream recipe gives depth to your photo and adds color dimension. If your recipe is a main course add ribbons of squash or a colorful salad to your plate. A lime or lemon wedge next to a cocktail offers a zesty burst of color. A sprinkling of herbs over your dish adds fresh color, but also gives your reader a view of the herbs included in the recipe.
Texture – Texture creates movement, height and a sense of story to your picture. Try adding texture to your food with napkins, cutlery, a cutting board, a vase of fruit, sliced fruit or vegetables used in the recipe featured. A few examples include; crispy tortilla strips on a bowl of soup, a few cookie crumbs alongside your stack of cookies, a sandwich that sits on a rumpled paper bag.
Play with Props – Cutting boards, platters, glasses, textiles and dishes give your pictures a new look from post to post. Be resourceful and scour your kitchen, you may have many of these items already. Add to your collection by shopping thrift stores, garage sales and antique stores without breaking the bank.
Take Pictures – Keep taking pictures and don’t give up. Continue to experiment with lighting, color play, textures and props. Find what works best for you and showcase your talent. The more pictures you take, the more you become comfortable with your camera, your style and your eye.
Have fun, find your vision, trust your instincts and share your passion.

Great tips on food styling, Vianney! I often struggle with taking pics of my food, but mostly at night. During the day, a/k/a with natural daylight, they typically come out great! When I visit restaurants, I generally like to go during the day specifically for this reason. Of course, this doesn’t negate nighttime eating one bit! Take care.

Great tips as always, Vianney! Food styling is one of those things I still struggle with. One of my favorite props to use some are a couple of slices of the fruits or veggies I used in the recipe.

Excellent and useful tips! My problem is I always want to eat the food before I’ve photographed it.

Thanks so much for the tips! I figure I can probably only raise the bar so much with a cheap, prepaid Android phone doing the pic-taking, but everything helps some. We had nothing really to start, but been hitting the dollar stores and thrift shops for plates, decor, etc…
